You need to run the script plustrce.sql which will create the plustrace role first. If you are on unix you get it it the following path:
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/sqlplus/admin/plustrce.sql. This path is not fixed just depends on your oracle home. Now you can set your autotrace on
